Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, constant effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was as well more refined, more precise, and less derivative on earlier efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after and then embarked on a world tour to support the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released as a double album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history not to feature one single track with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis condition which limited his singing capabilities. Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia, met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
